Farmington Hills is part of the suburbs of Metro Detroit, and is the second largest city in Oakland County. The first settler in what would later be known as Farmington Township was Arthur Power. Power purchased land in 1823 and returned the following year with a group of people, when the area became known as Quakertown. In 1826, a post office - which is now a historical site - was established and given the name Farmington. The township of Farmington was organized in 1827. Years later, Farmington was incorporated as a village in 1866 and as a city in 1926. Before it became known as Farmington Hills, two other communities had developed within the limits of Farmington Township. An area known as Wood Creek Farms was incorporated as a village in 1957, and an area known as Quaker Valley Farms incorporated as the village of Quakertown in 1959. Farmington Township, along with the two villages, joined together and incorporated into the city of Farmington Hills in 1973.
