Located between Detroit and St. Clair Shores, Harper Woods is a small city named after the founder of Harper Hospital in Detroit. The city is found in Wayne County, bordering Macomb County along 8 Mile Road. Originally part of Gratiot Township, the area now known as Harper Woods was first settled in 1859 by Casper Salter. Other settlers slowly followed Salter and after the Great Depression, the push towards suburban life resulted in a spike in the area's population. The residents of Gratiot Township voted to incorporate the township in early 1951 and later that year, Harper Woods became official when the charter took effect and the first city council was sworn in.

Just a few years after Harper Woods was incorporated, construction began on Interstate 94 - which runs through the eastern portion of the city - bringing much more traffic through the area. Though Harper Woods has no railroad access or industries, it is home to the Eastland Shopping Center. Eastland Center was one of the first enclosed shopping centers in the Midwest, opening its doors in 1957. This shopping center contains nearly 1.5 million square feet of retail space, and houses approximately eighty-eight stores and a small food court. Another well-known fact about Harper Woods is that it was home to the old East Side Drive-In. Opened in 1938, the East Side was the first drive-in theater in the area, and one of the first throughout the entire Midwest. Although it closed in 1977 and was demolished the following year, the remembrance of the East Side Drive-In is a glorious one.

The population in Harper Woods is estimated to be right around 14,000 people. The city has 2.61 square miles of total area - giving it a population density of approximately 5,364.98 inhabitants per square mile. Harper Woods has a median household income of about $44,020 per year, and the estimated per capita income is around $21,505 per year. The median home value in the city is estimated to be approximately $61,274, which is only slightly over half of the statewide median. The median gross rent in Harper Woods is approximately $720 per month. Aside from being known for the shopping center or the site for the old drive-in, Harper Woods also has numerous additional facts for which it has become popular. The well-known club The Hideout was a huge hit in the 1960's among the teens in the city. Several up-and-coming music acts from the Detroit area first performed at this location - many of whom would go on to become famous. Some of the most popular artists whose early career performances took place at The Hideout include: Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, Glenn Frey (who would later play with the Eagles), the group MC5, and numerous others. Another popular location in Harper Woods is the Notre Dame High School. During the 1960's and 1970's, the school building was used as an additional music venue, in which local bands were invited to play for school dances or concerts. Harper Woods is mentioned in a number of literary works, including poems, crime fiction novels, and even a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel written by Jeffrey Eugenides in 2002.

In addition to the variety of entertainment options and interesting places to visit, the city of Harper Woods also provides three stunning community parks for residents and visitors. The Harper Woods Recreation Department, Salter Memorial Park, and Johnston Park are all open to the public, aside from certain picnic areas and pavilions that can be rented from the city. Each park includes a children's playground structure near picnic areas. The city's parks maintain a variety of recreation options and provide the proper area in which to enjoy the outdoors. Recreational activities available in at least one of the parks in Harper Woods include: Basketball courts, baseball diamonds, batting cages, tennis courts, walking paths, picnic areas, grills, and much more.

The City of Harper Woods is served by two school districts. The main district for residents is the Harper Woods School District, while the Grosse Pointe School District covers portions of the area. The Harper Woods School District serves just over 1,800 students each year. Within the limits of Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe School District manages Charles A. Poupard Elementary School. Harper Woods School District manages Beacon Elementary School, Tyrone Middle School, and Harper Woods High School. Chandler Park Academy Elementary, Middle, and High School, as well as Starr Academy are all charter schools found in the city. A Wayne County Community College University campus is also located in Harper Woods.

The Harper Woods Public Library serves residents of the city and surrounding areas. Open weekdays, this library offers an assortment of resources and activities to keep the community engaged. The Harper Woods Public Library offers several events for children, teens, and even adults. Activities include: A summer reading challenge, arts and crafts, video game nights, magic shows, and much more. Also, medical facilities dot the area around the city, providing options when deciding where to receive health care. The medical facilities near the city include: Medical Experts LLC, Your Health First Medical Clinic, St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Chester Morang Clinic, Grosse Pointe Urgent Care, and several others. Despite being rather small in size, Harper Woods undoubtedly keeps making a big name for itself.
